Ke$ha Calls Bob Dylan Cover 'An Emotional Purging'

Pop singer sings 'Don't Think Twice, It's All Right' for Amnesty International anniversary album.
By Jocelyn Vena

It's hard to associate Ke$ha with songs about anything other than hot guys, body glitter and partying. But she's defying her usual topics of interest for human rights organization Amnesty International. The singer is one of the many musicians on the org's Chimes of Freedom compilation of Bob Dylan's music, out January 24.

When MTV News spoke with K-Dollar Sign last week about her all-star remix of "Sleazy," she also opened up about switching gears vocally and emotionally for her version of Dylan's classic "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right."

"I mean, I think it's pretty well known that he's one of, if not my most, favorite artists of all time and ... one of the most amazing lyricists as well — the original storyteller," she explained. "So I love Bob Dylan and this was just, like, a dream. When they asked me to do a cover, I was just, like, salivating and going through all my records. It was so fun. It was the best homework assignment you could possibly have."

K's version of Dylan's song is a slow-burning, heartbreaking ode to the already heartbreaking classic, where she channels Dylan through lyrics like "Still I wish there was somethin' you would do or say/ To try and make me change my mind and stay/ We never did too much talkin' anyway/ So don't think twice, it's all right."

Ke$ha had originally intended to record another Dylan track, but when she heard that someone else had their sights set on it, she settled on "Don't Think Twice," prompting a catharsis she could never have imagined.

"This song was kind of an accident. I sat down and this is the first take that I ever sang," she recalled. "I just sat down on my bed for the first time after months of being on tour and I just started crying, and it was kind of like an emotional purging, and you can hear it on the record."

In addition to Ke$ha and her contribution, the album will feature 75 other Dylan classics recorded by nearly 80 artists including Adele, Miley Cyrus, "Glee" star Darren Criss, My Chemical Romance, Evan Rachel Wood and Sugarland. The album pays tribute to the 50th anniversary of Amnesty International.

Usher Hopes 'Scream' Will Be the Song Of The Summer

'Let's get going, summer is almost here!' Usher tells MTV News.
By Christina Garibaldi

On top of his club-banging hits and soulful voice, Usher has another impressive skill: creating the song of summer. Usher has ruled the airwaves in the summer for years, with hits like "You Make Me Wanna" and "U Remind Me" making fans roll down their windows and pump up their radios to his infectious tracks.

Most recently, in 2010, Usher hit the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 during the summer months with his inescapable hit "OMG," and now he's looking to repeat that success with "Scream," the second single from his seventh studio album.

"Let's get going, summer is almost here!" Usher told MTV News. "It's intended to be that, but I don't think that was the only thing. We thought about live performance, we thought about mixing and matching and also giving people an energy that only [producer Max Martin] would be able to create."

"Scream" is the latest single from Usher's just-released album, Looking 4 Myself, which he hopes will not only get people on the dance floor, but also affect them in a more personal manner.

"If I'm gonna move you, I want to move you. I hope that it could be something that could be life-changing," the singer last month during "MTV First: Usher." "You may be going through something real crazy, who knows, and just need to get out and just enjoy yourself. So I always think about the club, I always think about that song that will be able to let you out of that slump, if you're in it."

Usher's latest album, which he called an "evolution" of sound, is just the next step in his musical risk-taking. He credits longtime producer Jermaine Dupri with the opportunity to reach many different genres of music.

"If I do track back to the first time I was about to take a risk, even though it wasn't about my direction, it was more so by Jermaine Dupri's direction with 'You Make Me Wanna,' " Usher said. "You didn't really hear that tone or that instrument on top of an R&B record, so it was an incredible collaboration or mixture of urban and classic R&B or pop... that really began to open up the conversation and allow people to understand, 'Oh, wow, this is not just an artist that you could put in a box or put in a specific category.' "

Are you excited for Usher's album? Michael Jackson To Appear On Pepsi Cans

More than one billion cans will be imprinted with the late pop icon's image.

A representative for the estate said the PepsiCo campaign is the first branding deal executed since Jackson died in 2009 at the age of 50.

While Jackson was handsomely paid in the 1984 deal, it was during the filming of an ad for that sponsorship that his life was forever altered. It has been speculated that Jackson's addiction to pain medications may have begun after the mishap.

The new campaign is timed to coincide with the 25th anniversary of Jackson's Bad album. PepsiCo will start distributing the special-edition cans in China this weekend and they will arrive in the U.S. later this month. The 16-ounce, collector's-edition can in the U.S. will feature a special download code that will link to downloads of Bad remixes. Katy Perry: 'It's Time For Me To Go The F--- Away'

'I want to go and write songs in the woods or something,' she tells MTV News about her next move.
By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Christina Garibaldi

Katy Perry and MTV News' Christina Garibaldi

It comes as no surprise that Katy Perry needs a bit of a break.

She released her megahit Teenage Dream album two years ago, and it's been a bit of blur ever since. She's shot numerous, big-budget music videos, topped the charts, got married and divorced, toured the world, re-released her album and even managed to squeeze in filming her first-ever 3-D concert film, "Katy Perry: Part of Me."

It's a sequence of events that would leave a lesser women exhausted. And it seems all that hustle and bustle is finally catching up with the purple-haired pop superstar. She said she's now ready to chill out for a bit — finally.

"I'm going into hiding," she told MTV News on Tuesday night at her splashy film premiere in L.A. The lady in red added, "I want to go and write songs in the woods or something."

If it feels like you've been seeing a lot of Perry lately, well, that will soon change.

"I'm gonna unplug, take my hair extensions out, feel my head again. I'm gonna unplug and recharge, if that makes any sense," she said. "I'm gonna go away. I'm sure you know it's time for me to go the f--- away."

But before she does actually goes off the grid, she'll be around a little bit longer as she promotes her July 5 movie release, which she said will show fans just how crazy her Teenage Dream era has truly been. Her film touches on not only the good, but also the bad, including her split from ex Russell Brand.

"I wouldn't say it's so therapeutic, because the movie is so well-rounded with so many different things," Perry said. "I guess some of it is just hopefully an inspiration for people. When they see it, they are like, 'Oh, yeah, she goes through some sh-- too. I can't dodge life's curve balls if Katy Perry can't dodge life's curve balls.' "

Check out everything we've got on "Katy Perry: Part of Me."

Mark Wahlberg Happy To 'Look Stupid' For 'Ted'

'I'm just ready to get crazy, look stupid, come off as being ridiculous,' star tells MTV News about Seth MacFarlane's live-action debut.
By Kara Warner

Mark Walhberg
Photo:

No matter how hilarious and realistic the furry and foul-mouthed star of "Ted" might appear in the trailers and clips, the human stars of the film did not get an animated bear to physically act with: Instead, they had to rely on their own imaginations and "act with nothing" for much of filming.

When MTV News caught up with Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis recently during the film's press day, we asked them what acting skills they discovered or honed while making Seth MacFarlane's live-action debut.

"I've really found myself in a really comfortable position," Wahlberg shared. "I've always said that years ago I wouldn't have been able to do something like this: I was a little too self-conscious. And now, being a married father of four, I don't give a sh-- about what anyone thinks. So I'm just ready to get crazy, look stupid, come off as being ridiculous, and that's what acting is.

"I really admire — and I've seen it in some really young actors — coming from a musical background, coming from the street, always worrying about being cool, wanting to be perceived as hip, you don't want to do too many things that may make you look a little skeptical," he continued. "I remember when we were doing 'Four Brothers' and telling Tyrese and André Benjamin to look at Garrett Hedlund, and no matter how ridiculous he looked, he would still be willing to try anything, and I admired it."

Wahlberg went on to say that his total comfort in his own skin has come via different stages in his career and being able to take risks and that "Ted" — coming to theaters Friday — is a perfect fit for his mindset right now: "This is full-blown, ass in the air, not caring about anything," he said with a smile.

Wahlberg's love interest in the film is played by Mila Kunis, who was the first to admit that in terms of the difficulty of acting to nothing, she had the easy job.

"I didn't have it as hard as Mark did. Mark had it pretty rough because he had a lot of physical activities with the bear," she explained. "I just had to talk to an imaginary friend. You know sometimes when you're driving and you have conversations in your head? This was kind of like that except [done] outward.

"And I had MacFarlane in my ear through an earwig, so I didn't feel like I was talking to space necessarily. He was off to the side hooked up to a machine acting the bear out, and I was getting the feed into my ear."

Check out everything we've got on "Ted."

Usher Premieres 'Fuerza Bruta'-Inspired 'Scream' Video

Ush's new clip mixes footage from his recent off-Broadway stint with some seriously sultry dance moves.
By James Montgomery

Last month in New York, Usher put in work on the set of off-Broadway show "Fuerza Bruta," starring as the show's Running Man and giving fans an impromptu sneak peek at his (then upcoming) Looking 4 Myself album.

But now, with the album in stores and its second proper single, "Scream," at radio, it looks like Ush was using that experience for something else: namely, the inspiration for the "Scream" video, which premiered Tuesday.

The clip is basically one long "Fuerza" performance, only this time, Usher isn't limited to the confines of the stage. Dressed in a natty suit, and backed by beams of light, he makes like his titular character in the production, running through a black expanse that seemingly stretches on forever (of course, he does make use of periodic pit stops to break into dance — it is an Usher video, after all). He's joined at the end by a female dancer, and the two share some seriously sultry moves.

Mixed in with the video is footage taken from his actual "Fuerza Bruta" performance — a female cast member floats above him, suspended in a bubble, water splashing around her. And much like the show itself — which is performed on a 360-degree stage, giving fans unprecedented views of the action — that live footage gives the "Scream" video a kinetic jolt to match the track's pounding, club-ready production.

Part live clip, part swaggering, oversexed performance video, Usher's "Scream" showcases the man doing what he does best: belting out a pulse-quickening, come-hither track while dancing like nobody else in the business. And hey, if this whole R&B megastar thing doesn't work out, perhaps Ush could make a name for himself on Broadway. As he proves with his new video, he's certainly got the moves.

Britney Spears Calls 'X Factor' A 'Beautiful Concept'

Spears says she wants to 'inspire' contestants on the Fox show.
By Jocelyn Vena

Britney Spears seems poised and ready to sit beside her fellow "X Factor" judges on the revamped second season of the show. At the Fox upfront this week, the singer appeared alongside fellow newbie Demi Lovato, as well as returning judges Simon Cowell and L.A. Reid, and gushed about the Fox reality show.

"Just really being able to be there and inspire the other contestants ... they're so young and they're trying to fulfill their dreams," she said at the event. "It's just a whole beautiful concept. It's just really cool."

While her negotiations with the show had been making headlines in the weeks leading up to the official announcement, Cowell brushed off all the hoopla, which includes a rumored $15 million payday for joining the show. "A force of nature, I was somewhere in the middle, but I'm thrilled. I love these guys," he said of getting everyone, including Spears, on board. "I charmed her."

Spears seemed equally taken with the prickly Brit. "He's adorable. He's completely adorable. He didn't have to try hard," she admitted.

Spears' addition to the show is hardly the only casting making news: Lovato also opened up about having the "X Factor." While little is known about the final hours going into locking Lovato in for the show, she's rumored to be taking in $1 million, according to Gossip Cop. Lovato was on a short list of possible contenders to appear on the show that also reportedly included Miley Cyrus and Avril Lavigne. "I'm so excited to be here," she said. "I guess you called," she added with Simon by her side. "And that's how it got set up, just a phone call." In addition to getting warm and fuzzy about each other in the interview, Cowell shared that the judges will be filming in the next couple weeks when they hit up Austin, Texas, to begin scoping out talent. And if you think the claws might come out then, Reid assured viewers that that won't be the case. "Oh no, we're gonna be really sweet to each other," he said. "Nothing controversial. It'll be perfect."

Michael Jackson Doctor Can't Afford Lawyer For Appeal

Conrad Murray asks judge for a court-appointed attorney to appeal his involuntary manslaughter conviction.
By Gil Kaufman

Just weeks after being sent to jail for four years following a conviction on a felony involuntary manslaughter charge in the death of Michael Jackson, cardiologist Conrad Murray is throwing himself on the mercy of the court.

The doctor had been slated to earn up to $150,000 a month to act as Jackson's personal physician before the pop icon's death in June 2009 from an overdose of the Murray-administered surgical anesthetic propofol. But on Tuesday E! News reported that Murray filed a notice of appeal in Los Angeles Superior Court in which he claimed that he is "indigent and respectfully requests the appointment of counsel on appeal."

Murray, 58, is planning to appeal both his conviction and his sentence, but has not yet filed papers with the California Appeals Court. He had hired two lawyers to handle his manslaughter case, but is now seeking attorneys with appeal experience. One of those former lawyers, J. Michael Flanagan, told E! that he was shocked at how his client is being treated in jail.

"It is crazy and unbelievable how [the sheriffs] are treating" Murray in jail, said Flanagan, who claimed he waited over an hour to see Murray, who was brought out in handcuffs and leg chains. Flanagan was further shocked to see Murray handcuffed to the table for their meeting, something the lawyer said he'd never seen before in the case of a low-level, non-violent offender.

Charles Peckham, who is handling civil cases against Murray, told the Associated Press that his client is under tight security and isolation that is more intense than other inmates at the Los Angeles Men's Central Jail.

"Treating him like Hannibal Lecter is offensive," said Peckham. "This man who saved lives made a mistake, and they're going to [make] him pay like a mass-murderer." Sheriff's officials defended the tight security, saying it was for Murray's safety.

Michael Jackson Lives On In 'Immortal' Tour

Cirque du Soleil show pays tribute to late icon with world tour.
By Uptin Saiidi

NEWARK, New Jersey — Music, dance and acrobatics combine in celebration of Michael Jackson's iconic life in the "Immortal" World Tour. From trapeze artists to acrobats and even a world-champion pole dancer, guests at the Cirque du Soleil show can expect a high-energy tribute to the legend.

The tour stopped for two nights in Newark, New Jersey, this past weekend (its 40th stop) and will open Tuesday night (April 3) at New York's Madison Square Garden, where it will remain through Thursday. From there, it will continue across North America through the summer before heading to Europe in the fall.

Having already produced the Beatles "Love" show in Las Vegas, Cirque is no stranger to musical tributes.

"Immortal" serves as a sensory explosion that starts on the subdued side and progresses in both spectacle and energy. More than 60 artists perform to 32 songs in a presentation that feels much like a concert with an ensemble of circus-inspired acts elegantly melding together. The stage is two levels with a long peninsula extending into the audience, where the majority of the acrobatics takes place. MJ's famed choreographic style was present in nearly all the numbers, and the audacious task of the performers was well-received by the audience.

The progression of the musical numbers moved seamlessly. The energy kicked into high gear with Jackson-like characters performing "Fanatics Medley" as Jackson 5 — one of them in MJ's signature fedora and another as a gold-suited mime. Jackson's youth was remembered in "Childhood" during which a recording of Jackson's voice referred to his early stardom as he sang, "Have you seen my childhood?/ It's been my fate to compensate/ For the childhood I've never known."

While the moving screens, elaborate stage designs and detailed costumes were impressive, one of the most awe-inspiring moments was witnessing what the human body is capable of during the pole-dancing number. Felix Cane, a two-time world pole-dancing champion, maneuvered in the sky dancing on a pole — with no harness — appropriately performing to "Dangerous," as the audience was captivated by her every move.

Another highlight was "Human Nature," during which the back screens were dominated by Neverland graphics and an image of a young Michael sitting on the moon. In front of the backdrop, a half-dozen artists wrapped in multicolored LED costumes soared through the air in sync, representing the constellations.

"Beat It" got the crowd moving while they watched performers in MJ's signature accessories, including his famous glove and penny loafers, dance in dynamic movement. A rock-infused duel between an electric guitar and electric cello capped the song.

After an elaborate performance to "Black or White," as the night seemed to be over and the audience slowly started spilling into the aisles, the lights illuminated one last time for an encore to "Man in the Mirror." The artists appeared to take a bow in front of exploding fireworks.

Have you seen "Immortal"? Share your review below!
